Eloi Recoing
Director of the Institut International de la Marionnette

Eloi Recoing was born in 1955 into a family of puppeteers. After studying philosophy, he began to write for the theatre. He was twenty when Antoine Vitez produced his first play: La Ballade de Mr Punch (1975). This was a decisive encounter - ten years later he became Antoine Vitez' assistant at the Théâtre National de Chaillot, then at the Comédie Française, where he collaborated for six years on big productions, such as Le Soulier de Satin (1987). Eloi Recoing worked simultaneously on dramatic writing and production and on translations (Brecht, Kleist, Wedekind, Ibsen).

As an active professional and then teacher/researcher at the Institut des Etudes Théâtrales, Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle (1993 - 2014), he developed many workshops focusing on production and the work of the actor. He also worked at l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Art et Technique du Théâtre (ENSATT) in Lyon in the dramatic writing department (2009 - 2011). He also taught puppetry at the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique de Paris (2011 - 2014).

After 7 years at the artistic and teaching direction of the Théâtre aux Mains Nues (2007- 2014), he was appointed director of the Institut International de la Marionnette (IIM) and its school, the ESNAM, at which he is head of teaching. His projects for the IIM, inspired by the founders of this institution unique in France - Jacques Félix, Margareta Niculescu and Lucile Bodson (the previous director) has the objective, in line with the expectations of professional sector, of reinforcing puppetry techniques in the teaching programme, deepening the links with the great drama schools, not forgetting the importance of integrating graduates into professional life, synergy between research activities and the activities of the school, the development of cooperation with the Worldwide Festival of Puppet Theatres and the enhancement of the Institut on an international level.
