This book (French Language) is the fruit of study days organized by the National Institute for the History of Art and the Department of Performing Arts of the BnF in partnership with Institut International de la Marionnette in December 2012 (http://www.labex-arts-h2h.fr/fr/journées-d-études-la-marionnette.html).

Situated at the crossroads of the domains of art, craftsmanship and technique, vector of religious practices and popular culture as well as actual aesthetic research, the arts of puppetry extend far beyond the restraints of collective imagination. By studying the role of the puppet and its avatars over history and in contemporary society, curators, historians of art and performance, anthropologists and artists discuss the field which cannot be reduced to its materiality alone.
How has such an object managed to enter museums and how should it be given the place it deserves in this new space? The question of the status of the puppet, beyond the aspect of heritage, is at the heart of this work which reveals all the secrets of this "Theatre of the world in reduction".
