The Institut International de la Marionnette (IIM) just celebrated the 20th anniversary of the École nationale supérieure des arts de la marionnette (ESNAM). Through the testimonies of those involved, we decided to take advantage of this occasion to consider how the far the Institut and school have come, and in doing so, chart the school's memory.
It also seemed important to reflect upon the transmission of knowledge, the basis of any teaching and a condition indispensable to the preparation at ESNAM for a future which corresponds to the new challenges of a sophisticated audience and creative economy. Today, an École Supérieure des Art de la Marionnette also becomes a space of reflection and exchange based on puppetry and the theatre.
In this sense, ESNAM cannot be seen without the Centre of Documentation and the Resources of the Institut International de la Marionnette or without the researchers in residence who come to work in Charleville-Mézières. It is the conjunction of the School and the Institut, and their dynamic interaction, that is responsible for the quality and the richness of ESNAM.

Raymond Weber, President of the Institut international de la marionnette and the École nationale supérieure des arts de la marionnette.
